I got it... 147

Got it home. Bought it for the hood and fenders. Seller pulled the engine, grill, lights, and electric lift for other projects. Hmmmm... I haven't checked if he took the rock shaft.

I'm not sure if I can bring myself to strip it for parts. It just needs a power plant to be a runner. Maybe a one arm loader/backhoe build is in its future. We shall see.

I think I got Cub Fever, LOL

Glad to hear that you got it.

Although, I can't imagine what kind of "other project" would be cooler than a 147.

i think you have to bring it back to life. the 1x7 is my favorite NF.

Little by little I am disassembling this basket case of a 147. I am finding that some of the most common wear items are not worn. The driveshaft hub, drag link, axle pivot, and brake pads look great. This leads me to believe that it has had an easy life. Although it does seem that it has spent the past few years exposed to the weather. Every lever and linkage on this machine is locked solid.

Finally removed the front wheels and put my summer slicks and rims on. Don't ask me how, but by some act of a greater being, the rear tires are holding air. Lastly I freed up the brake lever and linkages. Still struggling with the hydro linkage.

My search for a K321 has been a bust so far. I'll keep looking. If the illusive K motor can't be found I have been brainstorming the idea of mounting a Yoo Lang Ding Dong power plant in it.

I hope the PO chokes on those parts
Damn shame if Ya ask me
He could not care less about the IH Cubs....
The last of the NF's ad the 1st of the 321's....
Surely one worth saving.

(discussion points)
There is a side of me that wants to keep it original. It would be so much easier. Everything would bolt right in.

Then there is the Tim Taylor side of me. Wouldn't it be cool to drop a Cosworth Vega engine in this thing! (<--- a little extreme)

Would it be sacrilege to:
* Install a K301 or K341 engine?
* Mount bigger tires?
* Change the gearing in a manual transmission?
* Use aftermarket parts. (i.e. carburetor, piston, dodge axles)
* Replace fasteners not having IH head stamps?

Long story... short
It is ultimately the owners decision. (cost / purity / function / second kind of cool)

There are two kinds of people here on OCC. Those that like to keep it IH/CCC/MTD designed (purist) or those that take cutting torches and welders to them and turn them into pullers or other types of projects. I fall into the purist category. I think a 147 was designed as a beautiful machine and was engineered wonderfully for whatever task you can throw at it, and changing it is :bash:.

Dream big is what I say. It's a great tractor in it's original form, put back together, and left original.
On the flip side, nothing rare about them either, and if you were looking to mod one, have at it. The possibilities are endless, if done tastefully.:beerchug:

Betcha a $50 that those parts will sit collecting dust for the next 30 years.

My feelings are it is your tractor build it as you wish. If I had it I would find a K301 to put in it and get it operational. Then if and when a K321 comes along for the right price change engines. Good luck with what ever you decide to do.
