PTO Switch
I have a 1988 Cub Cadet Tractor model 2072.
The toggle switch for the PTO only engages when I attach a rubber band to it to hold it up and on. I have replaced the switch and the relay. It still does the same. Any suggestions? |
My guess is that one of the other safety switches has a problem. the 2072 is a CCC/MTD machine so I moved your post. :beerchug:
I'm sure the electrical master AKA Roland will be along with a wiring diagram and suggestions on what to look for. |
As Sam has indicated, it is another device. Check these two items. (A) The reverse switch. It is located under the dash. It is a micro switch that is dis-engages (Opens the circuit) when the Hydro Motion Lever is pulled into reverse. AND....(B) The Seat Switch, obviously located under the seat. It is a push button switch that is normally open. You have to set in the seat to make the circuit.
NOW.....this is under the assumption, that (A) the wiring harness is intact and in good condition, and (B) the tractor is wired correctly. Let us know what you find. |
Thanks but more!
First of all, thank you for your response. I apologize it has taken so long to look at this but I live in Minnesota and recently retired and have been in no need to mow, so consequently did not get around to working on this.
I found the micro switch but do not see how it is affected by the PTO toggle nor the Hydro shift/lever. The micro button does not appear to even be close to the shift, so it doesn't have an impact. At any rate, I did check this all out and it still does not work with the toggle unless it is held up. It all worked fine when I moved it to Minnesota from NY. My father bought it just before he died, 26 years ago, and though I had work done on it, it was the transmission (another future question) and the engine. Any other suggestions or resources?? Many thanks!! |

I would think the pto needs to be adjusted ,check the air gap on it and adjust accordingly per the manual, see it that helps.

Not the solution
OK, I got the switch and finally just got it in (was out of town hunting turkey)
That did not solve the problem. Next try? Seat switch is fine, as the tractor starts when the button is pushed down. |
AS A TEST...........
Take a long jumper wire and connect one end to the positive (+) Battery Terminal. With the other end of this wire, "Touch" the Brown Wire connector at the Bosch Type Holding Relay and see if the PTO engages and stays engaged, Report back. |
