Steering Rebuild

I just finished taking the steering column out of the Original to rebuild it. I put it back together, but I have wobble in the steering wheel. I replaced the rubber grommet's, but should this piece that's yellow in the 1st picture be hammered into the tube? That would stop the wobble.

In the 2nd picture is how it wants to sit in the tube? Should it be in the tube and how do I get it to stay?:BlahBlah:

The upper bushing you have there is worn out and new ones for the Originals are NLA.

I believe you can take the collar off the tube, put a bushing in for a later model and put the collar back on. You will need to trim the flange on the new bushing or the collar won't fit.

That didn't exactly answer the question you asked, it's just one way to get around the problem.

There is a plastic bushing that goes in between the column and shaft. You may need a new bushing. When I rebuilt the steering on my O, I did the wheel bearing upgrade to the shaft. To hold the bearing in, I used the bushing holder (the column cap piece). I dremeled out the center that is curved in to hold the bushing, then put the cap on a large socket and smacked it with a hammer to flatten the top surface. It slid right over the bushing on the column and hides everything. The only way to tell it is not stock is the cap is raised the thickness of the bearing flange (1/16"?) and a little unpainted column is exposed, easily touched up.:beerchug:

Edit: best pic I have. You can see just a little unpainted line on the right side, hardly noticed on my tractor. It would be a little more noticeable with your nice paint job.

As I was searching on the forum, I found a thread about this. The guy used a thrush bearing from here? But I think this is the upgrade to the steering box, and I need to get the wobble out of the top. Guess there is no easy fix, just have to jimmy rig it?

You are talking about the plastic bushing in the dash? I replaced those as well. Where do I get the plastic bushing that goes between the column and shaft?

I also did the thrust bearing at the box as outlined in that thread with parts from McMaster. You can't use the same bearing as listed, it's the wrong size. O's have a different size stud (1/2" I think), you need to measure and order the correct thrust bearing. This smoothes operation of the box and makes turning easier (I think), it will do nothing to remove play at the wheel.

Not the dash, I'm just talking about shaft, column and shaft. Yosemite Sam already stated that the O bushing is NLA and how to use one from a newer model. I'm describing (not well I guess) how I used a bearing instead of the plastic bushing in my O. Using a bearing will remove all of the play between column and shaft.

If you have the column out, inspect the angle bracket that mounts the steering box to the tractor. Mine was cracked around 2 holes and along the bend of the angle, there wa a lot of movement of the column at the steering wheel. I ground out the cracks and welded it, I also added a gusset to stiffen the bracket and reduce the flex.

That is me. I have removed the collar on some steering columns in the past and replaced it with a front wheel bearing from a IH Cub Cadet.
Page 5 of my Project Uncle Dick build has some information on rebuilding the steering column.

So, in simple terms, you just have to make something that will work? I can do that but thought there would be a replacement part for it. I don't have any play in the steering now, just that wobble at the dash. I will find something that will work.:bigthink:

Yes, that is the thread I was looking at. Do you know what front wheel bearing will work? I see his was a 70. Is the O the same size at the steering end?
