Curious on 122 and 125 prices
 

Hi there,

I've been looking to buy an older cub cadet and finally found one on craigslist.

It's a 122 with a creeper that runs well, a 125 that used to run, but now after sitting just runs and dies, three mower decks with one that needs work, a snowblower, and a blade.

He's asking $750 for all of it, is that a decent deal? I initially just wanted a tractor to mow and have a snowblower, but after looking through a FEL looks awfully helpful, and basically all the other attachments too!

It's probably worth $750 but $600 sounds better.

Welcome. What part of SD are you from? I agree with olds, his price seems fair, but I would try to get them for less. The 122 would work good with the snowthrower since it has the creeper. And the 125 would be nice for mowing since its a hydro.

Appearance and options are also a big factor here. If they look really rough that will make the value some less.

If they're well equipped, they can be worth a lot more. Headlights, three point hitches, sleeve hitch adapters, spring assists and hydraulic lifts make a ton of difference if you go buying these things to add on.

Before buying, I would pay close attention to the pto's, if they need work they can get spendy pretty fast. Also look for a hydraulic lift or at least a spring assist on the 122 to make lifting that snow thrower easier. If they're not there and you plan on throwing much snow, you will most likely want to get one or the other. The clutch in the 122 can also be expensive to rebuild if it needs repair.

Like the other guys, I'd try to get them as cheap as you can, not having everything mounted on the tractor and in running condition, you're buying a pig in a poke.

I've noticed that craigslist ad too. While I would agree with the seller that $750 is a fair price, looking at the machines, I would agree that $600 should probably be tops. The only options are that the 122 has a creeper. The addition of the QA-42 thrower, extra deck, blade and parts is nice, but they appear to have been sitting for quite a while and may need new bearings, spindles, wear edge. There is also no mention as to if the pto works.

From experience, ask the seller if it functions and is complete. My first cub had a pto, like the seller said, but had been gutted by the pto lever and only had the spring and half a release finger left. It isn't cheap to replace the missing/damaged parts.

My rule for buying cubs is $350 tops for running, complete tractors and $150 tops for nonrunners. So far I've been able to collect 5 cubs following it. But then again, I'm also the son of the cheapest guy around. If its worth $750 to you then go for it, but there are better deals out there.

At this point we're past mowing season, and I can still shovel my driveway so i don't need a tractor. I offered $500 and he said no, so I'll just have to keep a lookout for another one.
