109 problem
 

Well my 109 was doing a great job of mowing my land this summer until about 2 weeks ago. I started it and mowed for several hours until it was dark. Went back the next day and can't get it to turn over. I tried jump starting; then going directly to the starter and got nothing ! I do hear clicking under the dash. Pretty sure I have a generator/starter issue. Is there an easy fix ?

If you tried jump starting (with a KNOWN good power source) at the S/G using a known good ground on the engine and the "A" terminal on the S/G and the S/G didn't turn the engine, then yes, you most likely need to have the S/G rebuilt.

Check to make sure the engine and S/G turn by hand.

Try taking the wire off of the "A" terminal of the S/G and jumping it again (do not attach the jumper to the threads on the terminal).

If jumping it like that doesn't work, try taking the belt off, turn the S/G by hand while listening and feeling for a bad bearing. Not as likely that a bad bearing will keep it from turning with the belt on, but it is possible.

Does the engine turn over by grabbing the pulley ?
I mean it's not locked up is it?
Loosen the starter belt and see if it will spin without the drag of the engine
If it won't then have somebody rewind it or look for a replacement.
Others may have ideas what else to try

I had the exact same problem on my 125. Battery was strong, but just clicked when I turned the key. I opened up the S/G and found the wire inside had broken loose from the terminal. I soldered it back on and it all works great now! I might have some pictures running around of what I found. I'll have to look at see.

Edit: I have attached the picture of what I found inside my S/G.

Thanks for the ideas ! The engine is free and turns at the starter. I might have to open the generator up and look inside. Now that a bad bearing has been mention I remember just before I stopped mowing I heard a screeching which I though was the mower belt.
Just another month of mowing and I'll be done and can give the old #109 it's servicing for next year !:beerchug:
