Onan 140 sputtering please help
All,
Noticed today while mowing my mower would almost stall out via a sputter in high gear and high rpm. Then it wouldn't start after I was done mowing. I pulled the plus and it was black as night, seems to be burning oil maybe. Tried restarting and would blow white smoke. Put a new spark plug in and it started but now runs as you will see in the video. Any direction before I tear it apart and do a ring job? https://youtu.be/ZDMradDEDWQ |
Looked like black smoke to me. I'd be looking at the carb to see why it's running rich. Dirty air cleaner, problem with the float, piece of dirt in the needle and seat for the float causing it to flood.

Yes it is black smoke when running, white smoke when it had the old plug and wouldn't start. Just pulled the air filter and found what appears to be oil in the filter

Pulled the carb, had a bunch of dirt in the bottom, cleaned it off with air and inside and outside with carb cleaner. Runs way better, new air filter and air filter wrapper on order. Thanks Sam for the direction.

Glad to help.
Get a new fuel filter on it and plan on pulling the fender pan, remove the fuel tank and clean it out, then replace all of the fuel lines from the tank all the way to the carb. You may still have some crap in the needle and seat of the carb. High gear may be a bit much for the engine when your mowing. It's hard on the engine if you are lugging it. Also a 2140 is an AGS machine, make sure you are holding the foot control all the way down or you'll be slipping the clutches and burn them up. Read post #9 in this thread. http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...241#post388241 |
I was only running in high gear down the street without the pto engaged. I mow in 2 or 3rd gear as it is the best cut and since it is the age I don't have to ride the clutch. Fully aware of the shitty age system. I wouldn't hold onto the mower if it weren't for it being my grandpas
