New 3206 Working out the bugs

Picked up a 3206 that on the outside is in amazing condition.
Owner had just put $700.00 into the deck but the tractor was making a funny noise and he was just fed up with it so, I bought it. Had a broken wire at the starter, small red wire. Brake switch not working well. The main PTO pulley had never been greased (That was the noise the PO was talking about) There is still a noise that sounds like the starter is still engaged when you shut the motor down. I am going to try and attach a video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Imvy03CHuIM So far, it has a hydro leak somewhere, I blew it off really well, removed the seat pan cover and started inspecting everything. PO did tell me that his son engaged the DIFF LOCK while running and he had a shop rebuild the rear...can you say "EXPENSIVE".......LOL Found that there is a leak at the spool valve but it wasn't coming down under the carrier where the leak was present so, I removed the cover. Look at the picks and let me know what you think. HINT, Looks like something was installed wrong. Thanks to Todd aka "OAK" for the encouragement on tearing into this. Never done it before, so far haven't accomplished anything yet but hope to soon. |

Thanks Allen, there is certainly some work ahead of me, but may not be too bad. Will dig into it more next week.
That sound it makes when you shut it down concerns me some but other than that, I think that I can get that hydro leak squared away. |
I watched the vid and my hearing isn't what it used to be. Can you disconnect the drive shaft and run the engine and see if the noise is still present?

PITA to pull the drive shaft on those, you have to move the engine forward. Try idling it down before you shut it off and see if it still makes the noise. I'd pull the starter and check out the bendix drive first. Other possibilities are the PTO drive could be making noise, remember it has that vac operated setup. Could be the idler pulley spinning.

Im new so im guessing. Trying to learn by viewing, listening, observing. #5 pic a piece of metal out off alignment or laying atop main gear. #6 pic smaller gear towards top right not in align with anything?? Whats amiss??

I'll try to respond to all....
Sam I am pretty sure that it is not the PTO pulley. I have tried to idle it down and as well as leave it idled a little higher for shutdown and it didn't make any difference. Even tried shutting it down with the PTO engaged and no difference. I had my grandson shut it off while I was watching the PTO and it was fine. The noise is coming from the starter area. PO did install another starter and it did the same thing and I actually have the new starter just didn't go any further. With the rear taken apart, I can't do anything with the motor now anyway. As it is, I won't be able to touch this thing any more until next weekend. When I opened up that rear, the first thing that jumped out at me was that "dog" that is showing canted to the left. It is the diff lock mechanism and from looking at it, it looks like they re-installed it on the wrong side of a washer or clip. I have tried to find a good picture or diagram and I can't find anything to confirm it. Another clue is at the very top of that lever it is rubbing into that bearing block, so I am pretty sure that it is in wrong. I had originally taken it apart to fix the leak but have not found anything that is 100 percent "the leak" coming from the differential. I know that the spool valve is leaking but it isn't close to where I was getting oil and the area just below it is fairly dry. A little worried that I could have a cracked casing and it will be a real challenge to confirm that. I had also found that the monkeys that put this thing back together put the wrong length screws NOT where they were suppose to go.....just another thing to sort out. Need some pictures of a unit with the DIFF LOCK so that I can see exactly where that locking arm is supposed to go. Looks like there is a washer and a snap ring in there but that is all that I can see. |
Joe, if you think that is the starter pulling in when you turn it off try and removing the blue wire that goes to the solenoid after you start it. There are some diodes in the harness that could be hacked or other PO stuff going on that could be trying to energize the solenoid at shutdown.
There are some pictures in the service manual of the rear locker but I don't know if they show what you're looking for. Good luck and keep us posted of your progress.:beerchug: |
