782 Refurb Thread
3 Attachment(s)
I'll start this thread to chronicle some of the process along the way. Can't promise it will be short or interesting, but as I move through the tear down and refurbish, it will give me a chance to ask questions or answer others questions.
Bought this non-running IH built 782 at an estate auction July 16th. The right head and gasket were laying on top of the engine at the time of sale. Rolled it into my garage about a week ago and let the fun begin. Discovered that it has a Kohler M18 replacement engine. The drive shaft can be rotated and I didn't hear anything suspect inside. Removed the left head and observed both right and left pistons and intake/exhaust valves all move accordingly. Even so, I'm not putting a lot of hope in this engine. After running some basic wiring diagnostics, found out the seat switch didn't work and no power to the starter. Hot wire to the starter got it making a terrible noise, so needed to get it removed, disassembled and cleaned. Carb is a Walbro and it got removed to be cleaned. Drained oil, which surprisingly, looked really clean. |
Looks like you're off to a good start! Looking forward to your updates.

Continuing to clean up and disassemble. Got the engine pulled and had the typical oily/grass stuff on the engine plate. Also discovered the hydro lines had been damaged at some point.
With the engine out, was able to better access the starter. So will disassemble, clean and reinstall. Flywheel on the engine turns nicely. Still can't hear anything clinking around in there or anything giving me the impression something's wrong. So am planning to reassemble tractor to a point in order to attempt a start. We'll see. Hydro unit looks like it's never seen a hose. Question: Can I use a pressure washer on the hydro unit without fear of water getting into the relief valves? |

Got my old power washer running good, so used it on the 782 to clean it up. Came out real nice.

Looking good!! |
Looking good. Check the gov gear just to make sure it's there. I'm sure you knew that, but it's an easy check and a problem for that M series
