IH 782 PTO Clutch Removal
 

Hello,

I have inherited my Dad's IH 782 and slowly re-building. Completely rebuilt the mower deck, but now have issues with the PTO. I have searched for a technical manual on proper removal of the PTO, but no luck. Can someone direct me to a service manual, or provide specifics on the proper removal of the PTO Clutch?

The PTO switch tests OK, but when I apply 12V directly to the clutch there is no engagement. As a result, I need to remove and inspect. There is a screw in the middle of the PTO that will need to be removed, but noticed it is directly connected to the engine shaft which turns when attempting to remove the screw. Just want to verify the best way to restrict the shaft from turning when attempting to remove the front PTO screw.

Thank you for the reply. I looked over the manual you reference, but did not see any information on the actual removal of the Front PTO clutch. There was a section (4-20) discussing the test of the clutch with an ohm meter that is helpful. Unfortunately, there was no description on actual removal. I did find the receipt where he purchased this tractor on 2/26/81. Tractor SN: 10149646, Chassis SN: 2050594U670346.

Figured it out.

I had to place wrench on the back side of the flywheel to bind the shaft. Then using some leverage was able to break the bolt loose on the front PTO. Unfortunately, you have to remove the muffler also. I removed nuts from the manifold enough to raise the muffler, accessed the remaining two bolts on the top side of the PTO and slowly started to remove the individual PTO components.

Penetrating oil is a good idea and worked well.:beerchug::beerchug:

Let us know your findings. Wondering if simply the air gap was too big causing this or do you have an open Pto cool, etc. Did you test it with the meter?

A couple of burps with an impact gun and it will remove the crank bolt,
If no impact, a box end wrench hit smartly with a hammer will do the trick.:beerchug:
