Cub 1650 carb problem
 

Got a Cub 1650 that runs decent at low and high idle just sitting. Whenever I drive it around it runs rough spits and sputters and governor surges. Also while it sits if I shake tractor side to side it does same thing. Is this a float problem? It has the Waldro carb with plastic float.
Any help would be appreciated!

Kind of sounds like you have a water in your float bowl. My 682 with the 18hp command had the same symptoms as you describe. I took the top off of the carb and there must have been almost a 1/4" of water in the bottom of the float chamber.I noticed the problem going from forward to reverse while mowing the yard.It would start skipping and sputtering. Cleaned the carb and fuel tank and problem went away.

There was water in the fuel tank. Thought I got it all out. I cleaned the carb real good too. Wonder if that plastic float has water in it? May have to drain tank again. Hmmmm?

I think if the float had water in it gas would just pour out of the carb. :bigthink:

Drained gas tank. Took bowl off and cleaned. Fresh new gas. Still surges, stalls and occasionally backfires when riding on tractor or when u rock tractor back and forth while sitting. If you let tractor sit, it runs much better, unless u rock it back and forth?

Still sounds like water in the fuel.

Silly question, but you did put gas in it right? Seen people make that mistake a few times. Usually things won't run on diesel, but I've seen good running motors that will.

Still pretty sure it's a fuel issue.

It's a stretch, but it could be a loose ground and losing contact to the condenser. Rocking it makes it lose ground. :bigthink:

Yep it's gas, but for peace of mind I'm going to a different station and try that. Condenser looks good and ground

Check to see if the wire coming out of the point cover is insulated, not rubbing on the cover.:bigthink:

Point cover is off and still does it. What would cause mower to run rough when rocking it back and forth while sitting? I'm thinking about putting a different carb on it and trying that?

Unless you have one sitting, easier to fix what you have.

Causes could be:
Loose connection (electrical)
Incorrect float setting
Water/bad fuel

Not limited too these things, but I really can't think of anything else that would cause it. I know you have flushed the fuel system, but did you check the condition of the screen in the valve on the tank? You have to be overlooking it.
