Ignition switch help needed
Im starting a 1250 project. My buddy gave it to me and its been in my garage for years. Not a restoration project just a get it running and mowing task. Im confused with the ignition switch wiring(bought new switch). I downloaded two diagrams as reference. Looks like the wiring hasn't been changed and is original. My color of wires are different than diagram(i think). Wires are faded. So here is my question :
1) S, B, A, R - which wire goes where ? I have these colors leading to the switch: -2 wires together are Orange with blue runner/ Black -2 wires together are Black with white runner/ Tan (faded) -Green by itself - Red by itself Thanks for any help you can give me. Im new to tinkering on Cub Cadets. |
Google "1250 wiring diagram cub cadet"and you will find a cub faq site with factory wiring diagrams .....your wire colors don't make sense but that diagram will show you what each hooks to... be aware the safety switches may have been bypassed which might be why the wiring is off....
Also clean up those wires and check them in an area that hasn't been sun faded and you may find an entirely different color....I have been chasing wired on a 149 and the wires I thought were grey turned out to be dark blue, and a white wire turned out to be yellow... |

Thanks Jim for the Link, thats a picture I have not seen yet. I have googled but like you said Truckntran it doesnt make sense. I have noticed the wiring is a mess all over this tractor. I played around with it and have it cranking while key is in the run position. Now if I can get it to crank while only in the start position. Once again thanks for you input.

The 1250's original wiring would have had a Molex Plug on the end of the wires going to the Ignition Switch. One would have had to simply unplug the connector, replace the switch with the correct on and plug the harness back in.
Are you saying that the Molex Plug Connector is not there....???? Next, if you have the correct switch, then wire the switch to the diagram listed in our Technical Library Section. I suspect the wires are the correct color, but after 30+ years, the color has faded. That is assuming the harness is original. :IH Trusted Hand: |

Ah Ok that is very helpful. After digging into it I see wires spliced together every where. No plug and play here, no Molex connector to be found. Not sure what someone was attempting. I asked previous owner if he ever had a switch and he said he always started it by jumping wires with screw driver. Im already bald so no worry of pulling out my hair. I suppose its time to start rewiring it from a fresh start. Thanks for your helpful insight |
I think there are harness kits available from either the vendors at the top of the page, or elsewhere on the 'net.
Might be the better way to clean it all up? If you opt for replacing it with new terminals only, buy some heat shrink tubing to protect the connections if they fall off, or if something gets close enough to short across. |
I think I will look into a new harness and that way it should turn out better. I think they spliced into the harness and added switches for who knows what. Thanks again for the help guys.
