Please Help Me Save My Cub!
Gentlemen,
I'd really appreciate some advice. So a week and a half ago I was running my 147 hauling the kids around in the wagon after mowing duty and as I'm driving along it just slowed down and quit, just like you throttled down and shut the key off quickly. It would crank but not start at all. Towed it back to the garage and no spark. I ordered a couple new plugs and tested the coil and that seemed to be bad so I ordered a new Bosch blue. Well I put the coil and plug on and still no spark. I pop the points cover off and the Points Slayer I put on a few years ago is covered in oil. Clean it off and try again, no dice. Well I look back at the instructions for the Point Slayer and it says do not get any petroleum products on it. So I picked figured it's back to points. I picked up some points yesterday and put them on. I have good spark now but it won't come close to starting. It cranks all day but no start. I've set the timing on the SP mark using multimeter and no dice. I've varied the timing back and forth a bit and same result. Now if I pour some gas in the cylinder and put the plug back in it'll crank a few seconds then run but not well. I don't get what I'm missing and I'm frustrated to the point I'm about ready to sell this thing and but a new XT3. Any advice/help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Curt |

Just for starters.... 1. Fuel pick up in tank clogged? 2. Do you have an in-line filter, maybe clogged? 3. Fuel line to carb collapsed/clogged? 3. Dirt in the carb at inlet needle or other passages? 4. Did you turn the fuel valve off and maybe not back on? (don't laugh it's been done by many) 5. Is the gas fresh? 6. Last but not least, enough gas in the tank? |

I'm definitely getting fuel into the carb and with the air filter off I can see fuel getting to the valve. It'll run by putting fuel in the cylinder but it's really sluggish, puffs black smoke, and rough. Makes me think timing. I will admit that it doesn't mean it's not getting enough fuel. Don't kill me for this but I did try a quick shot of starting fluid a couple times and no dice.
I was wondering this evening if the acr could be stuck on. I believe you can check it through the cam cover but I'm not sure what to look for. If it is that is the fix a teardown? Curt |
Drop the bowl on the carb. If it runs when you put gas in the cylinder, I'm still going with your not getting enough fuel.
If it was, the plug should be getting wet and flooding when you try and start it repeatedly. |
Didn't by chance refuel the tank just before the problem began did you? I'm wondering if you have water in the fuel.

I agree it sounds like it's not getting fuel but I also wonder if you have a valve stuck open.

I'd be checking the head gasket... can check the valves at the same time.

I will check the float in the morning, I sure hope that's it.

Lanceskene may be right also, on the head gasket. I'd pull it before the side cover. |
