1772 power steering
 

New to this thought I would get your ideas on my problem. Run a 60in haban on my 1772 have a long run in the yard about 400ft. Last year the tractor would wonder all over trying to go straight. So I figured needed a new power steering cylinder out one on few weeks ago to get ready for mowing season. Now won't turn with tractor at idle or running wide open. Leaning towards steering column needing rebuild.

sounds like it might be the column. fluid and filter good? my column is getting a bit weak on my diesel. gonna have to reseal it someday soon.

I rebuilt mine and it wouldn't do anything as seen in this thread.

After thinking....:bigthink:I'm screwed, I figured I'd try some tests. I cracked the lines going to the cylinder with the tractor running and turned the wheel a few times and purged some oil, tightened them up and it has worked great. I say give that a try.

+1 on what V30 said also.

no he's saying he had to bleed the lines when he got it back together before it would work again.

V30 is correct, my thread repair worked great. Sorry about the confusion.

Oil and filter are good. they actually still make the steering column it's used in Steiner tractor noticed when I was working on ares at work. I ordered one Saturday. Only thing is the steering shaft and tube will have to be changed. Then I'll get mine rebuilt for a spare.

How much is one new?

They actually make a kit to rebuild the original too. Which is way cheaper. :bash2:
You must have a wad of cash to burn. :bigeyes: The kit is cheap, and replacement is unnecessary. You will have your old one on the shelf for about 30 years waiting for the new one to wear out. Whatever. It's your money.

If you have to partially take it apart to swap the parts, I'd suggest just getting the kit for it. They're pretty cheap if you don't get it through cub cadet. I did mine, doesn't leak a drop and steers smooth with one finger. Like jmech said it'll last a long time.
