982 Success

Former posts of Mix and Match 982, 982 Blues and Proud new owner.

Finally got my 982 consistently running. Replaced the ignition module and while the engine (M18) was out I replaced the starter. I still don't know how the thing ran at all since the former owners had power running to the kill terminal on the ignition module. I wound up changing out all of the electrical switches so my thinking is there must have been a faulty connection with one of the old switches and when the new switches went in it finally completed the circuit sending voltage to the ignition module and ultimately shorting out the module. Big thanks to Terry C. for suggesting using a relay to control the kill circuit, works well and keeps the original look. Also Roland for the wiring schematic which I found in a previous post.

I have mowed with it once, and the blade speed seems low (at least compared to other mowers I've had). Since the deck isn't original (it has a 317 48" deck) I'm wondering if the ratio with the PTO pulley and deck drive pulley is correct. Anyone know what the pulley diameters of the originals are? I plan on verifying the no load speed on the engine as soon as I get a portable tach, anyone have any recommendations for a good low priced tach?

Pete

:bash2: Obviously, they had no clue what they were doing.

The correct Mower Decks for the 982 were:
* 190-336 46"
* 190-359 50C
* 190-374 60"

The 317 deck is for the machines that were built after 1992 and use the 6" pto. Check your engine and see if it has the 4.6" or 6" pto. If you have the 4.6" and the deck has the original pulleys you will need to change to the larger pto. Let's see some pics of your 982.

I got one of these off flea bay. It is cheap and seems to work good. I can't vouch for it's exact rpm accuracy since I don't have another to compare it with. Then I wouldn't have needed this one. But I believe it's in the ball park.

Glad you got it sorted out. :beerchug:

Photo of tractor attached.

Thanks everyone for the feedback on the tach. I checked the pulley size, it's a 4.6 inch. Anyone have a part number for the 6" version

You have a nice 982!
