K301 Plug Gap Champion RH10C
 

The info states that gap should be .025.. but I have a "home brew" transistorized point system... the plug I pulled was at .065 if I remember correctly, and when I pulled the new plug it was pretty carbon fouled after only a short use. I'm wondering if that gap could be what is causing it to foul so quickly, and if the gap still applies when the coil and condenser are different / non-existent.. basically should I gap the same as a normal ignition setup even though its got a "home brew" pointsaver type system on it?

Throw the champion away and get an Autolite. Seriously, champions are the worst plug on the market, tests show that something like 4 of 5 are bad from the factory.

Yeah, .025 .....some here are suggesting .035....can't remember if that was for coil or mag motors....someone will be along soon....

Is there a cross reference for different plugs anywhere? I know Champions aren't the best out there but 4 out of 5??

K say .025 batt. pionts sys./ mags. .035 as a rule of thum!

For a K301 motor the points should be set at .020.
The sparkplug for a battery ingition is .035
The sparkplug for a mag ignition system is .025.
The info was found on page 1.6 of a Kohler service manual.

Thanks to David Kirk for researching this info.. Engine-Kohler K241[10hp],K301[12hp],K321[14hp],K341[16hp]. Champion H10c can be cross referenced with Autolite 216. Among others are NGK B4L, Bosh W9AO, Accel 168, Prestolite 14L7. Goes on to say: Notes: 14mm,7/16 reach, 13/16 hex. These plugs recommended for stock engines. It's not a Kohler coil... I can't remember the exact coil at the moment... and points don't appear to have a gap what-so-ever... I'm going back to "organic" that is Kohler coil, new points, and condenser this winter... right now I've got to fight with a bad S/G and replace Hydro/rear end gaskets.. so I'm trying not to fix too much during the mowing season... but I figured I might have a situation where the carbonization on the plug was due to the large gap... thus allowing the combustion to be only partially ignited, causing the symptoms to appear as if there was enrichment in from the carb.
