1450 QL starter help
Short discussion:
-What tooth count starter does 1450 use? -Who has good starter prices in MN or WI? Long discussion: Have been working on a 1450 I picked up. Want to get it running to till the garden soon. It started 1 time when I bought it, and the owner said he was having trouble with the starter solenoid. So, in my free time I redid all the wiring under the cover, and hooked it up today to spin it. Relay clicked loud and proud with a fully charged new battery, but no crank. So, I go down by the starter, and little puffs of smoke was all I got. Pulled the starter, and the bendix was stuck into the flywheel, with the teeth ground to near nothing. Took the bolts out of the starter housing, and this moron obviously smacked the starter with something, because the magnet is all busted to pieces. Anyways, here is the problem I am facing: the starter on it has a 10 tooth drive, but cub cadet's only P/N on their website for a 1450 starter is a 13 tooth. Also, is there any reasonably priced places in MN or WI to get a starter? I can get one shipped online (either tooth type) for $65-$70. Thanks in advance, Shane |

Yeah there in lies the problem:
I can find different P/N for K series Kohlers. 45-098-06 and 45-098-11 are 13 tooth (as is the one you linked) 45-098-07 and 45-098-09 are 10 tooth I took a 10 tooth off the 1450 I bought, but it never started right, so I don't know if the PO put the wrong one on or if it is supposed to be 10 tooth. The one on my 1450 had the 10 tooth drive wedged into the flywheel, the bendix wasn't working right, and 75% of the teeth were knawed off. But, it looked original (still had the "don't smack me with a hammer" sticker on it, and liberally coated in gunk. If I can't get a definite answer, I guess I will be buying both and then deal with returning one. |

In this picture of the used starters on cubclassics.com The one I took off my 1450 looks exactly like the one on the left (big nut on the end of shaft style). However, that one is 13 spline. :bash2: :bash2: :bash2: Just want to till the darn garden  |

I just re finished my 1450 and rebuilt the engine. My starter was the original on that came from the factory and it was 10 tooth. Here s what it looked like before I removed it.

Thanks Mike, that is exactly what I am working with.
I guess I will order the 10 spline... I don't know if there were different count flywheels, or if they just "changed" to a 13 spline somewhere along the way (i.e. 10 and 13 will interchange). But now that I know someone had a 10 spliner, I will get that. |
According to the Kohler Parts Manual, the correct Starter for the 1450 would be....45-098-11

So there is still an issue here
Most places I search for P/Ns for 1450s state 13 spline starters, but I had a 10 on my tractor, and Mike has a 10 spline. Can anyone actually confirm that they have a 13 spline on their tractor? |
