Drive Shaft help needed
5 Attachment(s)
I'm sure this issue has been discussed before but I wanted to get some different opinions on a drive shaft for my 1872. The coupler that hooks to the hydro is completely shot (splines on the hydro are fine). Now the coupler that hooks to the engine is shot also. It looks like to me the shaft end that goes into the engine coupler should have splines????? Let me know what you guys think would be the best route on this one. Don't have much money in this machine but plan on making it usable and to look nice farther down the road.

Is that the 1872 that was on Craigslist in Lost Springs, KS?

There's no splines for the engine side. You may need a new driveshaft if the ends are worn down. The ends in the picture look pretty rough.

The rag joint style drive shafts can be upgraded to the newer style.
Sam Mac, FrankF3 and a few others did all the research for us. Check this out; http://onlycubcadets.net/forum/showthread.php?t=25516 |

If you decide to go the CV style try the sponsors at the top of the page or member rweaver. You'll need the complete drive shaft and pump adapter from an 1882. You will need to drill and tap the center on your hydro pump input shaft for a 1/4-28 bolt, other than that it's all bolt in. Pics are of an 1872 that I did a couple years ago.

The part you need for the front of the driveshaft (back of the engine) is a flange assembly 903-0204. I just bought one on Partstree for about $30 shipped. That hole in the center is supposed to have a bevelled bushing inside that supports the driveshaft. Yours is missing which is why the driveshaft looks so beat up. Luckily I caught mine before it did any damage.

Just ordered almost a whole new drive line from my cub dealer. Got both couplers for the front and the rear and the shaft along with the fan. Hopefully will have them by the end of the week. Bad thing is deer season opens Saturday here in MO. Hoping I can tag out early Saturday though so I can get the thing back to life. :biggrin2::biggrin2:
