K181 governor
 

I have a model 71 with a K181 engine that I rebuilt last year. The engine runs great, but I'm not happy with the governor action. It just seems wimpy in comparison to other engines that I have done, K301 and K321. My symptoms are that the engine will run up to 3800rpm and then when any kind of load is put on it will drop 1000rpm at least. I don't have a pto on this tractor so the only way to load the engine is to pull something and then it is hard to see what the throttle is doing.

I have adjusted by the book numerous times with varied results. I've replaced the governor spring also. I know this style of governor is different from the bigger engines and I'm not a fan.

I was just wondering if this is a normal thing and I will just have to live with it or is there something else to look at.

The motor is not running correctly,did you rebuild it with a new gov and cross shaft?
If not loosen the gov arm nut and adjust gov as per the kohler manual.

the best I can do is a picture of the linkage.

The cross shaft and gear were in good shape, so I reused them. Could you post a side view of the linkage and the throttle cable connection? Maybe I have something wrong there.

Thanks for the pics. I looked at the throttle lever pin holes on yours and then mine. The wire from the governor arm to the throttle was in the outside hole furthest from the throttle shaft. I moved it to the inside pin hole and it seems to work much better. It actually barks a little bit when you put a load on it and doesn't over-speed when you let off. I will finish fine tuning tonight.

check your point gap to some time if the gap is to big it will surge.

What you meant to say was, check the TIMING. If the TIMING is off, it may surge.



Did you adjust the governor correctly? The book tells you where to put the spring, and how to adjust the governor.
