"O" trans question
 

can the "0" trans handle some big tires with out the final gear?? such as 8-24 (40) over all diameter tires?? some had mentioned using a hydro for this application. I would like to get some info on the matter first..

How big of a engine. Are you going to pull weight with it? If just for riding around I don't think there will be a issue but a 7 popper may struggle a little in the higher gears

Lookin at puttin a 12hp to it. Some yard work. Nothing to harsh.

Transmission can handle that no problem. Same tranny is used in the Cubs and Lo-boys that weigh a good bit more. The engine might struggle a bit, but 12hp should handle it.

FWIW, several years ago I saw some pictures of an Original with a pair of LoBoy wheels and tires on it (the big fat, diamond pattern, ballooney style tires).

IIRC, the guy was looking for ground speed... Not sure how it worked out for him, but I'll bet it's hard on clutches.

They do have final drives. But don't worry, they are stout units. I believe your weakest link will be the belt and clutch, followed by engine torque/power. The only damage I've ever witnessed to these is outdoor neglect and gears smashed by operators ham-fisting them into gear.

I think the guys are pretty spot on. If your not a meathead, you won't hurt it. My question is will the wheels fit or do you need spacers. The tires are 40" diameter, and the footrests are 18" from the axle centerline. Do the F-cub wheels have almost no back spacing? I am unfamiliar.

Also, are you putting larger front wheels on or will you be using the steering wheel to hold yourself on the seat? :biggrin2::biggrin2:

I also have an "O" sitting in the corner, waiting for new life. And, I am considering putting 29-30 inch AGs on it, with a larger engine. And yes, I'd put larger front tires on the front. (this tractor is too far gone to ever be restored, and called original) My concern is, that the axle shaft housings are not as beefy, as the later ones. I would probably only use it for plowing, grading, etc. But, by putting a rear lift on it, who knows how hard it could get used?

Note: None of this may ever happen, as my health doesn't seem to be holding up too well.

That is where mine is at. It is more the tans than the "o" at this point.
