1000 clutch rebuild - looking for parts advice
I have a 1000 that a neighbor in Illinois gave me years ago. I used to help them maintain their property when I was in high school in the 1980's. They gave me the 1000 in the late 1990's. Anyway, I moved to California in 1998 and my brother had the 1000. When I got it out here last year it was worked over and abused. The T/O bearing had been locked up, the disc was trashed and mercifully the linkage to the throwout lever broke.
I bought some parts from a questionable supplier and patched it up so I could use it. I replaced the T/O bearing, disc and surfaced the pressure plates. They were warped badly. Anyway, now I want to rebuild the clutch right. I use this tractor to mow grass and I drag a box scraper. I plan on getting a cart to haul yard debris and firewood. I also tow my log splitter when I need it in the yard. What I am looking for is a "daily driver" rebuild. I'm not planning on a lot of power in the future. The shaft looked good when I took it apart. The pin and hanger that hold the T/O lever are work so they will be replaced. The clutch slips right now so I think the spring will get replaced. It's been in there since 8/77 so it's time. The clutch slips either because the spring is tired or I didn't do a good job of cleaning the oil of the plates after surfacing them. I want to change the disc to be safe. BTW the spring is factor and red in color. I know it isn't a repacement for two reasons: 1. I remember it being red when I used the tractor in Illinois in the 1980's. 2. If it were a pulling spring there would be more effort required to push the pedal down. This is what I want to replace:

I guess you can replace the spring if you want to. I don't think that's why it isn't holding. I see no need to go heavier than stock for what you are wanting to do with it.
Kevlar, there are no fiberglass clutches. There are fiber disk, which is an organic material, not fiberglass. Kevlar will engage smoothly. Ceramic would be a rough engagement. I don't understand how you got oil on the plates when they were surfaced..... :bigthink: |
If you are rebuilding the clutch and drive shaft, add the following to your list of items to replace:
flex joint coupling disks (both ends) Coupling bolts and nylock nuts 3 pin Driver Disk center bushing Teaser spring teaser spring spacer/cup |
