Any ideas on how to smooth out the steering on a Cadet 80?

My wife wants to drive it but the steering is way too hard for her to try. I have some play in the spindles I can take care of, but the overall effort is a bit much for her right now....

Thing actually mows pretty good and I love the Hydro...

Thanks

The steering system on those suck. your best bet is to tear everything apart and clean it real good and grease it up, it won't ever be super easy to turn but if its cleaned and grease it will help a little.

Thanks....Yes it doesn't seem to be the best engineered steering I have come across.

You just don't want her on the Orange tractor cause you'll never get to use it again. :biggrin2:

I am unfamiliar with the Cadet 80. Can you run some skinny tires on the front, maybe tri-ribs, giving you less surface area contact = less friction and easier steering.

the 80 looks like this and the steering setup is a joke.

The original engine was White. IIRC, replacement engines were black.

No the engine is supposed to be white but in my opinion the only thing worse than painting an engine yellow is painting it white. My 108 had a replacement engine in it which was black and I liked the look so when I redid it I painted it black again and when I did the 111 for my son I painted it black so our tractors would match. Yellow and white engines show every little bit of dirt and oil and the paint also gets discolored from the heat so I use hi temp semi gloss black on my engines.
