Trouble with my 149

hi guys,

I'm new to the site and don't know how to post my own thread so I am responding to an existing. I have a 149. I was tilling my garden 2wks ago and when i finished and turned the key off the starter stayed engaged and was turning the motor over. I had to remove the cable from the starter/generator to stop it. I have since replaced the voltage regulator and starter solenoid. the starter still engages with the key off and the battery cables connected. Please help.

You will need to check the starter solenoid to see if it is stuck and also check solenoid coil (small terminal) for positive. Positive there should only exist in start position. If it's there in any other key switch position the key switch will need to be replaced. Also, did you replace the regulator with the correct one and verify proper placement of all the wires?

How do i check for positive on the small terminal of the solenoid? also looked up the part # on the cc website and ordered it online. The terminals are labeled differently on the new vr than on the old delco remy. The old one has terminals labeled bat., gen, and F. the new one has bat., F and L. Is this the wrong part? I connected wires as follows. Bat to Bat, Gen to L and F to F. Also, how do i check if the new solenoid is stuck? I am somewhat mechanically inclined but not with electrical systems. Sorry

Gen does not go to L. Does your new regulator have a terminal on the back side of it? Check and see as the aftermarket ones have the gen terminal on the back or underneath sometimes. This is most likely your problem as the L terminal is for Load or lights and will have constant positive on it so if you have it hooked to the gen wire it will be trying to start the machine via the v/r

Thank you,

thought terminal on back was ground. if it is generator then where does the ground wire go?

One side of the v/r mounts is ground, so you put the ground wire on the bolt that fastens the v/r.

Seen this all too many times.

The guys are correct, the terminal on back is the G terminal. I hope it works after you get it wired correctly..... a lot of the time after they have been wired wrong and ran, they are no good.
