It begins!

Started tearing into the 147 today, beginning with fender removal. The foot pad bolts were rustier than rusty and a couple of them had to be ground off. Removal of the rear lights to take the fender pan off too.

Took a hammer to the dents, and a lot of places need welded.

Much to my surprise a PO had done some trunnion work already. A key stock had been welded in place.

The shaft that runs through the pump has 1/8" play in it laterally. Is there a way to tighten this up?

I think that replacing the springs is a no brainer.

This is going to need to be shimmed with washers.

I'm not sure if I need to cut off the key stock and make the opening more square as the springs don't fit tightly at the front.

These were taken after I took an air hose to the whole rear end, and blew off most of the dirt/gunk.

I plan on taking off the top of the rear end to refill it. Is there a gasket that needs replaced there?

Thanks

"I plan on taking off the top of the rear end to refill it. Is there a gasket that needs replaced there?"

Yes. I never did find one for sale. Cut my own out of a sheet of cork gasket material.

I tried getting that gasket when I went through my 125, and it is NLA. Making your own is the way to go, but to be honest, I just re-used what I had. I figured if I ever got to an extreme enough angle to spill from there, how much hy-tran leaked out would pretty low on the concerns list! Oh, and 2 years later, still nice and dry up there.

Right on, this is gonna be good!

On my fenders, I stood them up with the back end resting on a 2x4 on the ground. Then you just take a hammer and tap them flat again. Be aware of that crease that runs right down the middle on each fender.

I did the same when refilling my 147 transaxle, definitely the way to go and that gasket was still available as of a year or two ago.

If your not a restoration purist, you might want to install a half coupling to the underside of that transaxle top plate.
Then with a hex or sq. socket pipe plug in it you will have a vertical fill hole.
And you can either punch a hole in the fender pan or not.

Nice Daniel good to see you doing yours up, I'm excited that you're digging in

drglinski 04-14-2015 02:38 PM

I see that the gasket is NLA (figures), which leads me to wonder how important it really is to remove the transaxle plate in the first place? I can fill it from the rear cover plug. Does gunk accumulate this high in the rear end that warrants taking it off to clean?

Thanks

PS my pictures suck. I'll try to get some better ones.

DoubleO7 04-14-2015 02:46 PM

Although I took the top cover off to clean out and refill, it really did not offer anymore needed access for doing just that.

What is the purpose of that removable top plate?
Maybe for removal or access to some part that can't be accessed or removed via the rear cover?
I don't know and have yet to read why it is there.

After a lot of upside down wrenching, some cussing and some frustration...

Its out. That was the easy part (I think, but hope not).

Here is another shot of the trunnion.

This is one of the brackets that holds on the front of the rear end.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...pskdbxhvut.jpg

I also discovered that the opposite one is loose.

Rag joints look ok (?). No spiral pin though...

I need another hydro flapper. How does it fit on the shaft?

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...psdlyy9e1h.jpg

I'm also curious how the wiring should run along the frame rail for the rear lights. On the top of the frame or on the bottom? Keep in mind I have a spring assist....

Yes I did :RTFM: http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...psi3odzwgy.jpg

Thanks!

Daniel,
looks like the rag joint has a tear in it.
The bolt used for the spirol pin may have damaged the input shaft hole.
the wire for the tail lights runs along the bottom edge of the frame on the left side with small clips holding it in place.
there is a roll pin that holds the flapper on.
It is not nessasary to remove the top cover, unless you are removing the reduction gear.
Look like the cam plate is worn some.
