Cheaper alternative than the Cub part?
 

As spring time creeps closer and closer, I've been giving the 2284 grass killer a good going over in prep for the year. One thing I've noticed is I have a small bit of play in my steering. I've tightened up the cylinder mount, made sure I have good alignment, and double checked my tie rod ends; all good to go. I was able to remove a very small amount of it with the axle jam bolts but I still have a little bit left and I've narrowed it down to item #20 in the pic below (part #923-3053). I've tried tightening the bolt but I've still got play, it's worn or loose or whatever but the point is, that's where my last bit of play is. Partstree says it's 1/2-20 and at roughly $60, I'm looking for a most cost effective alternative as once again, Cub is proud of there part. I found a female 1/2x20 with a grease fitting hiem style joint at McMastercarr but I don't know if I need a male or female thread? I want to say right handed thread but I'd rather ask to make sure than order the wrong part. Thanks guys :beerchug:

Just going by the diagram it looks like a female setup. Did you try and just type the part number into Google and see if any pics come up to know for sure?

I know it's female setup but wanted to make sure whether it was right or left handed threading. I won't have time to dig into the tractor to see for sure until this weekend (maybe) thus why I'd like to order it to have on hand when I get time.

As for googling for a pic, nothing of substance comes up that'll tell me the threading. :BlahBlah:

Yep, I was the one that originally posted that, I have used these rod ends as replacements on all three of my supers. I too was looking for a less expensive alternative to the factory parts. I have found they function as well as the original parts and have held up well. They are also available in the non-greaseable style if you prefer that. If you detect play in that particular joint also check the condition of the mounting bolt, on two of the three I did the threads of the bolt were badly worn and causing a lot of the play I was seeing.

Low cost, you mention. Heim joints can be tightened up for such as that non critical application. Remove the joint, yes, right hand female, and place it in a large vice, someway to hold it. Fit a couple sacrificial sockets, the kind you buy at garage sales or flea markets, over each side surface surrounding the swivel. Place the two sockets and the heim joint between the jaws of the vice. Slowly tighten the vice while checking closely on your progress. A press works even better. I've done joints like this and they've lasted a long time.
