Finally got it to charge!!!
After replacing EVERY electrical item on my 129 I have finally got it to charge.
1. Half the wiring was cut out and the other half wasn't hooked up to anything. 2. The ign switch was missing and it was being started and run from a toggle switch and push button. 3. Both safety switches were stuck, and the plate that pushes the brake switch was missing. 4. The starter solenoid was bad and wasn't even the correct one. 5. The amp meter was total junk. 6. The Voltage Regulator was a piece of rust. 7. And after all of that the generator side of the S/G was shorted. So about $600 later it now works as it should. :bash2::beerchug::Cub6: Now on to the deck!!! |
Now, Amigatec....I hope that you remember everything you did in case one of us has to go through something like that. Congratulations on getting her charging and good luck with the deck.

It just acted like a short in the S/G.

Glad you got your cub straightened out, Pat! :beerchug:

Pat:
A lot of us have had difficult issues with our Cubs in one form or another. That is just part of the game. These Cubs are nearing their 50th anniversary and they are going to need attention. We all have had cases where we have bought Cubs that were hacked up by a previous owner(s). :bigthink: On the flip side, one could go out and buy and brand new one, maybe see 5 years of service and then you can expect what happens then. |
I worked 25 years as a Diesel/Truck/Heavy Equipment mechanic, but I have never worked on a S/G before. I haven't touched a Generator in at least 20 years.
But I am reasonably certain that the Generator field had a short in it, but without the proper test equipment I can't be certain. And after using it as a starter only who knows what may be wrong it. |
USS Coral Sea CV 43. Midway class. Spent 2 years on her.
