782 Question - Will not start
 

I have a red international Cub Cadet that will not start. The 782 was in great shape until 1998 and the set-up for about 12 years after my father died. The barn leaked and the mower deck has some rust and frozen pulleys (saving to repair later). The 782 will not start. It will turn over and over (does not fire). I replaced the fuel lines, fuel filter, cleaned the air filter, changed the spark plug. I took to the small motor shop I use and was told I need a new coil and probably points. Does any one have a good supplier that may have these parts (Kohler Twin 17)? Is this tractor worth repairing? I really do not need it but I am a little sentimental about it and can use it in the yard.

Points will run ya about $12, got mine at NAPA.

Look for a coil on ebay, you may pick up a good used one to say $20. Otherwise about $100 or you can look up Kirk engines, he carries a twin aftermarket for less.

Is it worth it? yeah. Join in and make a project of restoring something that your dad left you. Mine left me with nothing but missery so I suggest you are ahead of the game.

You can also go to Carquest, I got points for about $12 and a universal coil that does not require an external ballast for $25 compared to the $45 they wanted for a Kohler coil.

James :Welcome2: Yes it's worth repairing! Alot of people would love to have 782 and you've got one that has family history so it's a keeper. The guys will give you all the tools to get it running and getting it back out mowing for you.

I would only replace the coil as a last chance effort. They are pricey. First thing to check is the voltage going into the coil. MAke sure you have 12 volts there with the key on. If you do, then I would clean the points. I would say that your problem probably lies there. Dirty points means no spark.If you clean the points and still get no spark, then I might look at changing the coil.

I feel the 782 is the best of all the cub cadet garden tractors so you should definitely keep it. I'd also start at the points, then coil.

Whats invloved in setting the points?

Do I need a dwell meter for this?

It is worth keeping and fixing. I love my 782. I had same problems when I got mine. Found it to be the keyswitch. If that barn leaked on it the switch could be bad. Check for voltage at both on and cranking positions. Good luck.

The first problem I had with the 782 was the keyswitch.

That was a pain. It looks like they can't handle the power and end up burning out.

This still could be my problem on top of the carb, points, coil..
