Brought my first Cub home today

Well here it is..the first Cub i ever owned. This is a 109 that i found in S.C. Saturday. My son knew the guy who had it and he agreed to sell it.My Daddy always said son it aint what ya know its who ya know.We had to give 300.00 for it and maybe thats alittle high but around here you cant buy stuff like an old tractor cheap as folks think they are made of gold.If this one works out with alttle TLC then i dont think it was a bad investment.

The seller is a honest fellow but a bit of a packrat with plenty of money who keeps everything. He said the 109 ran perfectly but the SG didnt charge so he parked it in the storage building and bought a new ZTR a few years ago.As the building got fuller and fuller of junk the 109 got pushed outside and has been sitting where the pic was taken for 3yrs. or more. The 109 body is perfect .The grile and nose look great and this model has no factory headlights. The paint is dull from being outside but will clean up easily and that surface rust on the hood should scrub right off.The Kohler turns over fine but the SG trys but wont spin it even with cable connected directly to SG.Most of the work will be freeing up stuck levers and such just piddly things. The hydro lever is stuck solid and rear tires are busted from sitting flat.I am proud though and will keep everyone updated on the progress.

Any advice if it isnt firing?

Since it's been sitting outside, I'd clean the points for sure, maybe just change them. And put in a new spark plug. Autolite 216 is good. New condensor too and make sure it has a good ground contact. After that and it won't spark, test the coil with a VOM. Hey Rolland, what's the Ohm specs again? Probably in the Tech section somewhere.

Is the engine turning over at all? Don't forget to change the engine oil too. Check the grounds if the S/G isn't turning very fast.

The SG tries to turn but is very slow or tries and stops but the motor is free.Iwas afraid the points were behind the flywheel but have learned they atent.

How bout the frozen hydro lever? Dont want to force it.

Nice find. It looks like Keith has the "non-firing" procedure covered. On the hydro lever - it's probably rusted solid. Soak it in some kind of penetrating oil, not WD-40, and let it sit for a day or two and then slowly work it over.

Thanks for all the help.Cant wait to see how much power that 10hp. Kohler has compared to the throw away tractors of today with those high hp. overrated engines.Hope the Cub wont choke down doing a little yard work.
