Front Oil Seal
 

I bought Cub Cadet 1862 with 925 hrs. It was being sold because it had a leaking front oil seal.
The specs are:
Tractor- Model 141681100; Serial # 815934
Engine-Model M18S; Spec. 24246; Serial # 2017319496

My questions are:

Is this a chronic problem with these type engines? I have had similar engines and did not have any problems

Are there any tricks to replacing the seal?

What would cause this to happen? I noted someone said it was a faulty breather causing pressure to build inside the crank case. If I disassemble the breather and clean it, how do I check it for proper operation? Don't mind replacing the seal, but would prefer not to have to do it again too soon.

I believe the part number for a replacement seal is KH-52-032-10-S. Is there a better aftermarket seal or should I stick with this one?

I had to replace the front seal on my 2072 when I got it. Bought an OEM replacement, no problems. It can be a little tricky to remove. I took a 2" screw and with caution put it right through the plastic seal. Once it hits the block and can't go any further it will start pushing the seal out.

I just checked the parts site. It lists KH-X-583-5 as the correct seal. I was under the impression that they were the same front and rear. :Huh: Note: These engines are installed backwards in the tractor.

I wouldn't say it's a chronic problem but is common. It looks like yours has 2 seals in it. I would pull the 2nd one out and put 2 back in.

As for the breather, IDK if the cyclops had the rubber umbrella valve or not. If it does, it's probably broken and should be replaced with a metal one.

As far as the breather, Kohler released an updated version of it vs what it came with stock. If it were my engine, as long as it ran good otherwise, I'd replace the breather with a new one, replace the seal, and see how it works. :beerchug:

That is called the rear oil seal, as Shrewcub said, part# X-583-5-S.
I personally have had problems with the rubber coated seals lasting and now use a SKF high temperature seal # 13734. I have not had a problem since. I also agree with replacing the breather, yours very well could be the old style.

I am going to replace the breather assembly also. Does the assembly include # 8 and #9 in the diagram? I see the both have the same part number- KH-52-035-02-S. Are there any other parts of the breather I should get while I am placing the order?

#8 is the rubber umbrella valve that is no longer used. The assembly you get will have a metal flap that is riveted to it. So yes, 8 is part of 9, now. Check yours before you buy it to make sure it doesn't have the metal one.

I also appreciate the heads up that the engine is placed backwards in the tractor. I didn't know that, but looking at the exploded parts view, I see it. "That's a handy piece of information to have, right there."
