Needing points help
Ok this is my first go with points...My 70 points were the first I had ever messed with the only thing I did was clean and check them with a gauge and they were good to go.The 129 I brought home yesterday may be a different story.Ive been chasing my tail trying to get fire since yesterday and finally got it to the coil. But still no spark at the plug.I pulled the points cover and noticed that that they were closed and when I turn the engine over the rod does not move keeping the points closed like its stuck. Here comes the list of stupid questions about this.1 does the rod itself pull out of the block.2 is it the camshaft that moves the rod in and out to open and close the points.3 what should I do at this point. The goal of this tractor was to maybe make a mower out of or a tiller tractor out of it for my parents.Im just trying to get it running in general to see if its worthy without a total rebuild if a total rebuild is in order I'll probably just park it for now and continue on with our 70 project..Sorry for the stupid questions. Thanks Randy...

1. Yes
2. Yes 3. I wonder if somebody left the ignition on and it welded the points shut. Take the points assembly off and see if you can get it un-stuck. If so, grab a points file and clean them, up, and then time it statically with an ohmmeter. If they are really stuck together or just horrible-looking, get a new set and put them in. Hope that helps. |
Thanks Matt I went back a took the points off and they will open close and are not welded shut. But the point rod itself is completely froze up will not pull out turn anything.I went out and pulled my points off my 70 and the shaft just slipped out but not the 129.I soaked it pb blaster and put some pliers on it and still wont move at all.:bigthink:

Keep soaking it with PB blaster...it must really be stuck. Patience is a virtue here.

Thats what I was thinking too...Ive soaked a couple times and just letting it sit.Tractor itself has set outside with out a hood for 8 or 10 years everything on it has been froze up Hydro linkage engine itself brake pedal and linkage. So far so good on getting everthing else unstuck.

This is stuck bad bad.. I put a rag around it and then my needle nose vise grips on it to try to wiggle it a little while Im shooting Pb blaster on it and you know how you can just tell when a bolt is gona break thats what it feels like. I would hate to know what you would have to do if you broke that thing off flush with block.Soaked it again and letting leaving her alone till tomorrow.

Went out early this morning and gave it another shot of P B and a little wiggle but still froze solid.I wonder if when I broke the engine free if it bent this rod instead of pushing it out???..Anyone ever have this happen? That would explain why it will not budge.
|
I would say that's definitely a possibility.

Anything is possible,
But it still should twist or move a little, even if broke or bent. If it were mine, I would put the piston all the way down and gently tap on it with a hammer and try twisting it with a vice grip. If that didn't work, I would heat the area around it with a torch lightly to swell the casting, and try again. If all fails, dissemble engine/remove camshaft, and get more aggressive with the heat and a hammer. The pin will need replaced anyway. Give it a little more time with the penetrating oil, and tap on it to jar it loose. |
I gotta agree with what ol'George says, remember just "peck" on it with the hammer, don't beat it.
