Going to look at a 102

What should I look for?

It has a mowing deck, fenders, and the engine has been pulled because it needed a ring job. Engine included.

thoughts?

Its always tough to look at a tractor when its not running, there's just no way to tell if you he clutch is good or if it pops out of gear. When they don't run its kind of a crap shoot what your buying until you get it running.

There really isn't a whole lot I can tell you about this 102.

You already know the engine is bad/needs to be rebuilt.

It would appear the rear fenders are unbolted from the frame (not sure why anyone would take the rear fenders off just to get the engine out).

About all there is would be to see if the gear shift moves into all 4 positions, you may have to "rock" it back and forth a little to get it to go in each gear.

You can check the steering to find out how much play it has.

You can also see if the clutch is still bolted up and see if it releases and look at the edges of the of the disk to see if it is separating or not.

Since you are considering buying a pile of parts, I would take a jumper wire and a battery pack or some other way to check the starter/generator to see if it starts AND generates.

Probably the most important thing would be, is to make sure you get ALL the parts for it. That may not sound like a big deal, but sometimes, depending on the part, good used parts can get pretty expensive.

If you are looking for a project that could ultimately become a very useful addition to your lawn and garden equipment, this is probably as good of a project as any, but be prepared to dump a LOT of money into it if you want a "nice" old Cub Cadet.

I hope you are getting a REALLY good deal on this tractor.

AND what olds45512 said.

rbarri2 12-01-2014 06:03 PM

i passed on it.
he was firm at 200

you probably made a smart move, it would have to have some nice options on it to be worth 200 needing an engine rebuilt.

Yosemite Sam 12-01-2014 06:22 PM

Yeah, I too think you made a wise decision.

But keep looking, there are better deals out there.

I thought I saw a creeper lever but it was just the key hanging. Any chance it has that OP?

rbarri2 12-01-2014 07:23 PM

I'm not sure what an OP is. Option?

It didn't have any options that I saw other than fenders and deck. No lights, creeper, rear pto, etc.
He had even sold the PTO clutch on ebay already and wasn't very friendly, I'm not sure how he became a Cub Cadet owner. :biggrin2:

I'm happy with my decision to pass on it. When I told him that I bought my Cub Cadet 100 for $30 I don't think he believed me.

OP Original Poster

Smart move on passing since he already started parting it out.
