Elec PTO noise
 

I have a 1650 that I only mowed with well this year its time to hook up my snowblade. I took off the deck,mule drive and belt. Installed blade, this was the first time I ever took off deck and mule drive. when I started the tractor and turned it off I heard a noise coming from the pto I never heard before it sounded like the bearing was free spinning and making the noise. my question is,is this normal

Yes this is normal. Since there is no drag on the Pto pulley with no belt, it will continue to spin when you turn the engine off and sound like a turbo winding down

No, no.... this is not normal. There is a brake on the PTO that should keep if from spinning when it's off. Sounds like the brake is too loose. It is the 4 nuts that hold the square piece on the PTO. Just snug them up a bit. They should be tight enough to keep it from spinning, but not so tight that they engage the PTO. If it doesn't quit, you may indeed have a bearing going out.

thanks Jmech Im gonna go out and check those bolts. It sounded scratchy when winding down and I see they are a pricey item.

Well I went out to the barn and saw the 4 nuts started just tightening them down and noticed there are springs behind them,glad I only tightened one took it back out and tried to tighten them evenly. Seems no more noise.Is it critical to have the nuts exactly even

It's ideal. I'm not sure "critical" is the right word. "Ideal" is better word. I just try and either count the revolutions or measure the distance. :beerchug:

That's what I tried to do and when I spun the pulley, it seemed to drag on different sides more adjusted other side and so on till it felt even.I think I got it, thanks for the late night help Jmech
