Frustration - overspeed?

Morning all,

I'm starting to get really frustrated with my tractor. Its a '66 125 with Kohler K301A. I have just recently completed a tune up for the winter and put my snow blower on. I put a Kirk Pointsaver on with some new points and rebuilt the carb along with some other things. I put it all back together and it runs strong... too strong. I adjusted the governor per the service manual and this thing just runs at full throttle or nothing, I can adjust the throttle down but it usually peters out and dies. Putting the throttle back to normal (75%) where I usually run it and it is revving ridiculously high. I at this point just burned up the belt running from the generator to the engine because it was running too high. I am getting frustrated , need some help. Anyone in Western NY want to make some $$ and get this thing purring for me? Some remote help will do in a pinch, give me some ideas, thanks.

PS - In regards to changing this belt, does the grill need to come off? I don't want to take the blower off I just struggled to get it on...grrrrr

If I remember correctly.....pull pto lever out enough to push it as far forward as it will go bypassing the normal "stop".
Make a mark on the threads of pto engagement rod where it meets turnbuckle body then undue the turnbuckle body.
Fish old belt out and off over the end of rod where turnbuckle body was.
Reverse process with new belt.

I had this same issue with my rebuild where the engine wanted all or nothing. Mine was due to incorrectly installing the tab onto the governor gear.

Did you you remove retention nut off the governor shaft? and Did you rotate the governor shaft any?

Sounds like the governor isn't adjusted correctly. Perhaps the throttle linkage also. :bigthink:

Do you have a copy of the engine manual?

Vacuum leak maybe?

My 73 had the same problem and it was in the governor gear and throttle linkage.

The thrower belt should not be extremely difficult to put on, so taking it off should not be too hard either and then re-installing it. Be sure to turn the tensioner knob opposite on your thrower. You will have to remove that belt to install a new belt on that S/G.

I was not aware that the 125 was out in '66? May want to check those serial numbers again?

Thanks for the replies all.

I do have the engine and service manuals

I may have only pulled the governor linkage to the left and not the governor shaft, I'll look in the morning.

I hope it's not a vacuum leak, will check governor first.

Will have to recheck the serial number, might be off.

Thanks again for letting me vent!

Doesn't sound like a vacuum leak to me but you never know. I am far from an expert on small engines and have never worked on a narrow frame before but I am located in western NY, zip 14885 and would be glad to lend you hand if are close.

I think an issue or possibly issues with the governor, carb, and throttle cable are what's going on.

I haven't checked any of my cubs yet but I have a chainsaw tach which should work to set the rpm.

Let me know if you are close by.

Regards,
Mitch

Thanks Mitch, I am 14530, looks like quite a haul for you. I changed the belt and reset the governor again. Tractor is running again and is better regarding the overspeed although still seems strong - but now I have good response from the throttle so I have more control. i will have to get a tach and see where I'm at.

Does anyone know what I can expect for a throw distance from this snow thrower? I know it's a single stage so I can't expect a ton but it seems....weak.

Our 42" thrower on the 125 would throw it 30 feet away if it was light and fluffy. To a little more than five feet if it was wet and heavy.

The slipperyness of the inside surfaces will have a detrimental effect on that too.
