Extension Spring used for Side Panels on the 1772

I've been working on an off on the 1772 and I have a question about the extension spring used to pull in the side panels near the radiator. On my 1572, (which uses the same spring) it isn't too bad to connect and disconnect the spring. On the 1772, it seems to be under a lot more tension and seems to ride up in the at the top of the radiator screen and into the channel there right by the radiator tubes. I'm afraid one of these times the hook on the spring is going to poke a hole in a radiator tube. What you guys noticed the same thing and if so, what have you used?
