I H chipper shredder?
 

I have a friend that collects green stuff and when he finds cub stuff he lets me know.He found a 149 with a tiller for 400 bucks that has been sitting a few years and called to tell me about it....In our conversation he told me this p.o had a I H Chipper for the front of the tractor in his barn...I know there were chippers for these tractors but thats about it...I'll probably ask about it when I go....Can anyone tell me what its worth or have any pics of one....and what parts or mounts I would need for it...When you dont know if its all there for me its hard to put a value on it .I also no it depends on condition.I also know this p.o. has other narrow frame cubs as well.Will it fit on W/NF tractors or both? Sorry for the ignorance.Thanks Randy

It might be the po has a IH 59M shredder. I'll try and post a picture I have from the internet. I don't know the origin or where I stole it from. The shredder has a mule drive with a shaft and pulleys so be sure and keep an eye out. Here it is

There is one listed right now for $450 and looks to be in good condition. Seller may give you info so you now what to look for.

I know a guy who has 2 or 3 of them and he told me that it just shreds up leaves....not limbs. I've never owned one so I really can't say, that's just what he told me.

The IH model 59M is only a shredder; it doesn't have chipping capability. IH had three push type models with different hp and the largest, the 79C had a chipper. If you search Youtube there's a 59M being used but I can't remember the title.

You're exactly right, the ad says limbs up to 1 1/2". I don't have any IH shredders but I have and use regularly an older Kemp and a Mighty Mac made by Mackissic (sp). The Kemp has rigid shredders and the Mighty Mac has flails; this is the only difference I can tell. Both have the chipper chute and are said to chip up to three inches. This is simply a sales pitch because it's too much for the machine and very slow. The Mighty Mac is basically a green 79C. I have used the shredder for up to an inch and it was all I wanted to put it through. It pulls hard on the machine and doesn't do a good job shredding. The chipper, on the other hand, will require a little more time but do a much better job. Anything about 3/4" and smaller I will shred but small stuff really shoots through the chipper so that's where most of mine goes. I mainly use the shredder for leaves. I've never used a 59M. I would love to see what it will do with the increased horsepower behind the machine. I also don't understand why IH didn't put a chipper on the 59M.

One other thing worth mentioning is the type of grate or grinding plate used. There are a couple of types depending on what you want for a finished product. I use the finer for leaves in both of mine because I'm shredding leaves and chipping sticks, twigs, etc. The chips end up in the main drum anyway and get flailed through the grate.

I'm not exactly clear on what you meant by "professional tree trimmer type/style shredder". Commercial chippers are self feeding and will chip the whole tree in most cases. There's no comparrison to these machines. Like our little tractors they are little chipper/shredders made for the homeowner. To put 1 1/2" in the shredder would be like trying to mow 3 ft grass in second gear. It might do it but the outcome could be better.
