682 won't move forward/backward

Well its been a few months since I got help with my 682 GT regarding the engine. Engine has definitely been burning oil but its been running pretty well.

I went to use the tractor a little while ago, got moving forward and I pushed the speed control level forward more to move it forward faster. Got a snap and then nothing - no forward or reverse from the speed control. Its like the brake was engaged but I could move the speed control lever. (No, I did not have it moving forward fast and slam the lever into the brake/no forward/no reverse/neutral position)

I pushed the brake down and released it and then its like the transmission let go and I was able to continue rolling down the hill. Once it leveled off, I tried the speed control again - same thing - it's like it just stays in 'neutral' regardless of speed set full forward or full reverse.

Yet again, I pulled the tractor back to my garage with my truck. With it in the garage, I pulled off the side panel and the panel that covers the area between the steering column and the seat. I see that the brake is pushing the speed control back to it's 'stopped' position and that the speed control is pushing the arms that go back to the transmission as they normally do. The driveshaft is still attached back to the trans as it is supposed to.

So I'm guessing something broke within the trans or the arms that I can't get to that I suspect are on the side of the trans.

Thoughts?

Any suggestions on where to go next in troubleshooting this or you believe the problem might be?

Thank you in advance. I really appreciate the help I've gotten from this forum!

Just ran into a similar issue on my 782. Engine mounting bolts loosened and caused the drive shaft to snap the roll pin connecting the hydro shaft.

Here: http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=34580

While you have the tunnel cover off (between steering tower and seat). Start the tractor and observe the drive shaft at the coupling to the hydro shaft, just rear of the hydro fan. Is the drive shaft rotating and the hydro shaft not? If so, then you'll need to install a new spirol roll pin. Also check your engine mounting bolts to ensure they're properly anchoring the engine.

Hope this helps.

Well I'm assuming this is the right fix. I looked at this earlier, was about to reply saying this is not the case but just looked again...

I start the tractor, the drive shaft and hydro fan spins but the hydro shaft is too short to say if it is spinning or not (I doubt I can even get a sharpy there to put a mark on the shaft). Stopped the engine and slowly spun the drive shaft / hydro fan by hand... The hydro shaft IS NOT spinning. I spun it enough to see that there is a hole through both sides of the drive shaft / hydro shaft coulping piece that does match with a hole through the hydro shaft.

Is this where a spirol roll pin goes?

Any suggestion on where to get a new spirol roll pin? (I'm in Carroll County Maryland if that helps)

Do you just slip the pin in and bend the pushed-through-ends over?

Is this a wearable part that should break over time?

I haven't checked the engine mount bolts yet but I don't think they're a problem. Will check later.

Thank you!!!

Just check your local hardware store or automotive supplier for a spirol pin (looks similar to a roll pin, but not the same).

If not, send me a PM and I will mail you one - I have about 30 spares (dont ask why...).

Did you check your engine mounting bolts? Engine loose? If so, you'll need to get that secured down as well.

Be sure to get a spirol (not a regular) roll pin. Pick them up at the hardware or automotive store. Appears you have several TSC stores in Carroll County. Can't remember the size, but think it's 1/4" diameter by 2" long. Double check the thread reference I mentioned. You should be able to follow the directions in that thread for removal and installation. Basically, driving the old pin out and inserting new pin.

I haven't checked the engine mount bolts but I will.

TSC - yea, I'll go there. Are you sure on the pin size for the 682? I can't seem to find the spirol pin mentioned in any manuals.

As far as pushing the old pin out like you had to - won't be an issue - it fired itself out. I'm sure thats the metal bang sound I heard. Must have shot off the tunnel cover / frame.

1/4 inch diameter by 1 1/4 inch long is the right size for the 682. I did get a regular roll pin (actually bought a second and a cotter pin to hold it in if the first gets thrown out again soon). Will get a spirol roll pin ordered today too.

Got the pin installed. Checked the engine mounts (they're all tight). Fired it up and tested - works as it should!

Thanks for the help with this!
