Steering column play

The top of the steering column on the 147 is loose within the dash. (IE I can physically see the whole column moving laterally when I turn the steering wheel even when I look behind the battery) Could this be a worn bushing issue or is there something that can be tightened? I'm not that familiar with the steering (yet).

Thanks

The only thing holding the column in is 2 bolts at the bottom and sometimes they come loose so I'd check those, nothing holds the top of the column other than a rubber grommet in the dash so you will get some movement.

Thanks, I'll check those.

Yes, a surprisingly wonky setup by IH. My dash isn't in yet and I'm having to be careful about knocking the steering tube around.

I imagine this is only (or best) accessible with a mower deck out of the way first?

It can be done with the deck on but will be much easier with it off.

I had this same issue bad on mine...the hole the grommet fits into was all wallered out....i welded a piece of 1"×1" tube straght down from the underside of the steel dash tower...then i fastened a ubolt to it,and tighted it around the column when installed..worked pretty good, i might have a pic...alot of people use the steering wheel to get on the tractor, or push it around....
