149 question
I have been reading past posts till my one eye fell out, well it felt like it, but have not had my question answered. Eric and I are getting our 149 running and noticed it had no fan on the driveshaft. We ordered one but it came without the fastener. I picked up a C shaped spring clip today but it will not compress the slotted tabs enough to hold it on the shaft. What have you guys used to clamp this fan in place or did you use another method of attachment.

Here's what I used. 3/4" ID. Got it TSC, under $1 if I remember correctly.

That is what I picked up at the local hardware store but it will not compress the fan enough to secure it to the shaft. I wonder if those springs are made of different thickness's to hold tighter as the one I got seems pretty thin.

I think this is a much better solution as opposed to the "C" clip...
It is available at any well equipped Hardware or Auto Parts Store. |
Thanks Roland. That gives me another idea. There are spring wire clips that you squeeze the same way so maybe I have two possibilities. If that does not work I may cut a couple more slots where the fan fits on the shaft to make it more flexible as it seems to be pretty stiff and hard to compress.

The original snap rings were much thicker and have more spring tension than any I have ever seen at at a local hardware store.

Those snap rings come in at least two thicknesses--I've ordered the heavy ones from McMaster.

I went looking again today. Our local hardware store also repairs lawn equipment and garden tractors. I could not find any compression type spring there that would even come close to compressing those fan tabs. Their mechanic seems to be a knowledgeable man since he cautioned me not to run the tractor without the fan. He said they had nothing that would hold the fan on the shaft with just pressure. His suggestion was to use a hose clamp that you tighten with a screw driver and also use epoxy before tightening. He said the slight offset weight of the screw should not be enough to throw the shaft off balance. What do you guys think of that as a fix???

Our 149 came without a fan. It did have a rather large hollow cap nut with what looked like hot melt glue inside it. That obviously did not work. I am not real concerned about removal of the fan after we put it on providing we get it placed properly first.
