CUB108 clutch/brake peddal is very low - what is wrong?
 

Cub Cadet Enthusiasts:
I bought a Cub 108 around 1984 so I have had it for quite a while. I can do work on it like the PTO clutch but I am certainly not the best Cub mechanic. For example, the clutch/brake pedal is very low and does not return to the fully up position when released. I tried to adjust the bolt in the front of the clutch shaft but there was not much movement before it was fully screwed in. Is the low clutch pedal indicating a bad clutch? It seems that the clutch pad is not too thin. The brakes are very touchy when I press the clutch/brake pedal. I think the brake pads are worn out. Is the low clutch/brake pedal an indication that the Cub needs new brake pads?

The most common cause for the brake/clutch pedal to go too far is worn brakes, so you should remove a rear wheel and look at the brake pads. If they are worn, they can be replaced. Not cheap, but replacements are available (expect to pay $35-$40 each for the 4 pads required.)

It's possible that the pads are not completely worn out, in which case you can simply adjust them by running the lock nuts on the ends of the brake actuator rods--look under the foot pads and you'll see the rods running back to the brakes. Take up any slack there. That might solve most of your problem.

If the pedal is not returning to full up, then the return spring is broken or missing. That hooks on the shaft under the tractor that the brake pedal is attached to, and then to a spot on the frame. It returns the pedal to the up position. That part is also available for a few bucks.

Go to partstree.com (there are other sites, somebody else will chime in with a cheaper source soon) and enter your tractor model number. A schematic will show you the parts you need.

sawdustdad: Thank you for responding to my question regarding the Cub 108 clutch / brake pedal. I didn't mention that the pedal SUDDENLY did not return to the up position. So, I am anxious to check the pedal return spring as you have advised. The brake adjustment rods are fully out and have been for some time so I really think that the Cub need 4 new brake pads.

paulhentschel: Thanks and OK, I will check the technical library for brake pedal adjustments. I'll have the instructions ready after I check and probably replace the return spring and brake pads.

I hope to keep this Cub running for a few more decades, if possible.
