71 Engine Swap/PTO Question
 

A question for anyone that has hopefully did this swap ...

I am thinking about putting a single cylinder with electric PTO in a 71. I know about the 1/2" PTO belt and notching the frame , but will the electric PTO line up with the mule drive pulleys ???

What engine are you wanting to use?

What's wrong with using the mechanical PTO?
If you use an electric PTO, how are you gonna start it? Or are you using an "AQS" engine?

The 71 doesn't have an engine in it , so nooo mechanical PTO.

The engine has an electric starter.

Wiring will change..... quite a bit actually.

The PTO should line up, but dunno. I think it would be easier to find another engine that do what your getting ready to do. Just my :TwoCents: FWIW, engines up to a 12hp will fit with no frame mods. But the gear drive starter models have big flywheel covers on them. I think, (but not sure) that they were all the same size up to the 16hp. Might have to notch the frame a lot to make things work...... Your tractor, so your choice. I'd look for a belt drive starter motor.

first you have to spread the frame 147 style to get it in there since it has the big flywheel. then you need to figure out where to put the gas tank since it has a separate mount in a QL. then you pretty much have to rewire the whole tractor since the 2 engines share only 1 thing in common electrically and that would be the ignition wire. shorter throttle and choke cables. then you can worry about the PTO. should come out pretty close but by now you've pretty well re engineered the whole tractor so fabing up a different mule drive shouldn't be all that bad.

The guys have been pretty-much on the money so far.

A change-over like this is quite an undertaking. Not sure I'd want to try and tackle this one.

What they said. I did it with a Mag12 into a 71. Didn't put a PTO on it because it's setup for plowing. Here is the thread on the build.

Clutch or engine removal is a PITA because of the deep sump on the Mag. You cant slide the engine forward to get it out or in, you have to use a special coupler from Midwest Super Cub or slide the rear back.

I may have to try it , i just didn't want to go to all the work and the PTO/Mule Drive not line up.
