QL engine mount problem
A couple of the holes on my engine mount frames are wallowed out quite a bit. Will that be a problem with new oem rubber mounts? I'm referring to the large diameter holes (about 1") in the ends of the engine mount frames where the rubber mounts go. Can I handle it with a large washer? I'll try to get pics tonight.

Here are the pics of my motor mount frames I promised. Took a while for me to take time to get the pics. Three of the four large holes show some wear, but you can see the one that is the worst. Is this usable, or do I need to repair/replace it?
I plan to do the cross-brace mod, but don't want to waste the time on it if it is not going to work with that hole hogged out like that. If it must be repaired to work, I will probably try welding the hole up and then trueing it up with a die grinder and a file or something, but I'm no experienced welder and might just make it worse. |
I would try welding that up and grinding it down. That isn't going to be very good for the new mounts if left alone.

I go along with Matt,
Your welding skills are not that important in this situation. What you are trying to accomplish, is centering the rubber in the hole. Doing nothing I think would prematurely wear the new mounts. Just smooth up the weld and make it a reasonably round hole with the grinder as you planned.;) |
I don't know what your skill level is but here is what I would do. I would find four washers close to the same thickness of the rails. Trim them so they just fit in the holes and weld them in. Drill the center holes to the correct diameter. Dress things up with a grinder leaving no burrs. Your done. I don't like filling holes with a welder. It's too hard to keep the finished holes centered.

I'd do like Wild Bill and just get another pair. There's a bunch out there and you can practice your welding on something else. When you get the rails do the mod and this will be a thing of the past. The rails you have would make great anodes in an electrolysis tank.

Sometime in the next month I'm going to pick up a parts 1450 for the fender pan and seat. I'm hoping it has good motor mount frames, too. I guess I'll wait to see what it has before I do anything with it. Thanks for the input.

You're lucky only one hole is egged out. Most I've seen have been much worse. You might struggle to find a better set for a reasonable price.
You can try welding that one first; you've got very little to lose if it doesn't work out. |
patton acres has the set with the rail mod already done for 65 $ plus shipping.
