782 - Can I pull the starter without the engine?
The bendix is hung up on my starter. I've started pulling sheet metal, but I have yet to figure out how to get the starter out without pulling the engine. I looked here but if it's been posted I missed it.
Thanks for any encouragement or pointers. -- Mike |
Possible? Yes. Difficult? Very. If you don't have much time, keep at it and you'll get it. Remove tin, be patient and it'll come. Otherwise, just pull the engine. Its 6 bolts holding it to the frame, 4 for the drive shaft, plus a couple wires. And while its out, you can give it a good cleaning.
There's a page out there somewhere that more or less shows how to do it with it in the engine but I'm on my phone and don't want to look it up :biggrin2: I'm sure someone will post it. Good luck bud! :beerchug: |
IIRC, you can. But it's not easy. The motors are so easy to take out I'd just pull it. It's really not hard.

I was afraid you'd say that. The Cub is nose in in a shed about 200 feet from the garage where I have the tools and hoist. My son is a power lifter, so maybe I can get him to come over & pick up the back end & we can push it where it needs to go. :bigthink:

Dad replaced the starter on his 782 without removing the engine. Granted HE did it and I didn't, so I don't know how difficult it was.

You can do it. It is difficult and time consuming and the "words" will fly. A major PITA. Take your time & be patient if your going that route.

Pull the engine and save yourself the two years of life you'll sacrifice from all the stress and aggravation!!! Besides, I'm sure you'll do more cleaning and inspecting once the engine is out. You should have it all back together by next Spring!!:biggrin2::biggrin2: Depending on how much cleaning and fixing you find. Good luck. |
Just finished putting mine back in and got it up and running. They aren't to bad to get out and back in, compared to trying to remove the starter while engine is still in the tractor.

I replaced mine in the 782 without removing motor, just used a universal joint socket and worked ok, took a little bit of time, maybe 1 hr removal and install

got to the point where i can have a Magnum 18 or KT17 out of the tractor in 15 minutes. undo the bottom 6 bolts, undo the 4 on the drive shaft, disconnect the plugs for electric, disconnect the wire on the starter, and don't forget to disconnect the one for the electric PTO. slide the motor forward a touch, then lift. you don't need to lift it completely out. just tilt it to the side so you have better access to the starter. i find its much easier to just pull the motor than work in a tiny little space with wrenches getting frustrated.
