Onan black exhaust
 

Hellow Everyone......

My turn to seek assistance. My CC 2146 Onan is ill. When I attempted to start
it, it backfired repeatedly the exhaust was blue at first then black, The only way I could keep it running was to work the throttle. Thinking the black exhaust was a rich mixture I went to the carb and found oil on the air intake venturi

I think I know what the problem is, but before I pick up the BIG hammer I thought it would be prudent to ask the pros.

There is a reed valve in the crankcase vent. They are prone to breaking. I'd check that. I imagine it's a vent problem. But wouldn't hurt to pull the carb and go through it too while you have it apart.
