109 hydro

on my 109 the hydro is really loose.it goes in to reverse just from the vibration of it running and when you give it all of reverse its really slow. what do you think is wrong? i plan on taking the fenders off tomorrow so i can see the whole linkage better to fix it.

I had a similar problem with my 782. When you put in foward it would take it a second to build up speed and would hardly go into reverse, but it would jump into reverse. What it turned out being was the Trunion bracket wore completely through the side and the spring fell out allowing it to wobble around.

ihnick:

YUP, sounds like loose linkage. Check the linkage from front to back and tighten (or repair) anything that is loose.

109 Hydro

I had the same problem on my 129 shortly after I got it, only mine jumped to full speed forward. Judging by the look on my neighbor's face, I must have looked quite shocked. Ruined another pair of shorts!

If you take off the tunnel cover and follow the speed control down to the split clamp/anchor, there will be a bolt (socket-headed cap screw on mine) that is used to tension the shaft. Tighten a little at a time and move the speed control until some resistance is felt. A little resistance will do so as not to wear out the clamp. Good Luck and happy Cubbing.

If that doesn't do it for you, you may need to replace the plastic bushing in the clamp.

AND if that still doesn't do the trick, then you may need to repair your trunnion, so go here.

Then go here.

And here.

And finally here.

Then after you get that fixed you will need to go here.

I think that should pretty-much take care of it.
