Cub Cadet 2072 Hydro

2 Attachment(s)
I recently purchased a 2072. It was not running and covered in oil, but the price was too good to pass and for some reason Cubs especially Supers are hard to come by here in NC. Spent the last couple of months taking it all apart, cleaning, repainting, replacing parts but after all that work, it's looking decent again and back to running condition. Only thing left is to figure out what exactly I'm going to do with it.

As I was taking it around for a spin, I noticed one small problem. When in neutral, the hydro has these surges which results in slight jerks. Nothing major and the tractor doesn't actually roll forward, just produces a slight jerk. This goes away completely once it's off neutral, and the tractor has no loss of power going up a hill, but I'm afraid it might be a sign of something going bad. My knee jerk reaction was that maybe there's some loose linkage so I took the tunnel cover off put it on stands and fired it up to see if there's movement of the trunnion when the surges occur, could not detect any. It had new oil, new filter and new gasket put in in the process, so other that, anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Good looking machine!! :beerchug:

As far as the hydro, if you're sure no linkages are amis, I want to ask this; did you use a CCC brand filter, or appropriate cross referenced filter, when replacing your old one? A wrong filter could produce undesirable results. My other guess would be something with a release valve?

Out of curiosity, when you got it, why wouldn't it run; what was wrong with it?

Thank you! For the filter I used a Wix 51410, I'm not sure how I cross referenced it, I think I found it in a post on this forum.

As far as the machine, the PO indicated the machine was suddenly engulfed in a cloud of oil while has using it and he parked it. I located the source of that in a busted hydraulic hose, which I replaced. However it sat for a year with gas in it , and the carb was covered on the inside with the most disgusting slime. It also formed some sort of crystal deposit at the bottom of the carb bowl which PERFORATED through the carb bowl. That, plus it didn't have a battery :D

Yikes! Seems as though sitting is the most dangerous thing to there ol' cubs. If it had a hole in a hydraulic line, its possible there's an air bubble in the system if it wasn't blead properly. Maybe someone else will have another idea :bigthink::beerchug:

It's the neutral adjustment on the hydro. When its running in neutral, move the lever just slightly forward and see if it quits. If it moves or gets worse, move it just a little past neutral to the rear. Where it stops the "surging" is where neutral actually it. Either remember that, or adjust the linkage so that neutral is where you want it to be. The service manual tells you how to do this.

You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. That was exactly it. Moving the lever about 1/16th of an inch forward fixes it.
