Cub 1810 fuel pump and carb problem

I am new the discussion group but have owned cubs as far back as a 125.
Currently my Cub in use is an 1810 that I've kept going since about 1990. The problem I got into now is with the fuel system. I first found that it would quit running when the tank was less than 1/2 full and then last week it got to stopping even with a full tank, also it just smelled of gas all over. My thoughts were the fuel pump had finally failed so I took it apart and replaced the fuel pump but then it would not even turn over. It was like a hydraulic lock, pulled the plugs and the right cylinder was full of raw gas. Took off the carb (Walbro) and found that some foreign material got into the float needle, cleaned it out with carb cleaner and purged it and blew it out with air compressor to where it seemed clean. I changed the fuel filter and all the gas lines and pulled the tank and cleaned it out. Then I found that the crankcase was full of gas too, probably from the float stuck open. Anyhow I took the old fuel pump apart and found what looked like parts of some gasket stuck in its check valve, this looks like the same stuff that was stuck in the float valve. Anyhow I got it running again but when I am first running it for about the first 10 minutes it tends to die several times but then after a while after restarting it several times it will finally keep running. Still seems to be starving for gas at first when it stalls but the funny part it finally will keep running and is fine for a couple of hours while I mow. I am going to show a photo of the debris I found in the old fuel pump. I can't imagine what causes this stopping problem after first starting it. Jay |

Sounds like you have done everything right!! Is the Walbro an adjustable carb? Or the fixed jet? I'd say the carb still has some foreign material in it. Pull it apart one more time, and you should be good. Does the fuel tank shut off valve still have the screen on it? If so, it may also be the culprit, but I'm pretty sure it's in the carb. For peace of mind, I also suggest changing the oil a second time. Any fuel in the crankcase is a bad thing. Seen this scenario many, many times. :beerchug: |
