Quicky paint job question

I'm not looking to restore my QLs but a fresh coat of paint would go a long way. What's the minimum I have to strip it down for painting to give it a new shine?

This is said politely so I don't want you to think I'm being a smarta$$. If you aren't doing a 'nice' paint job just knock the rust off and scuff the old paint. That should be good enough for the results you are looking for.

I usually wipe down the areas to be painted with a clean rag and acetone or lacquer thinner before painting and after sanding. If there is any substantial rust, I might paint it with a rust converter first, then prime and paint.
