K 181 governor

Got the chance to work on the 70 today to see how well I had done I had just put the carb on after a good overhaul on it and decarboned and lapped the valves checking everything out to see if we needed a overhaul or not...The valves looked pretty good but the guides are a little worn but not out of speck.Anyway after the I got her fired up and running for 15 minutes or so I started adjusting on the carb to fine tune her when I noticed quite a bit of oil seeping around the governor area and running down the block. Looked like around the where the shaft came out of the block.I looked up the parts diagram on the thing and I cant tell if theres a seal there or not.So there lies the question Is there a seal there and how hard it is to change if so. Does it seal from the inside or outside? Thanks Randy

There's a brass nut that holds the governor cross shaft in. That's worn out and leaking. If you remove the governor arm, you can unscrew the old nut and put in a new one. It's like $5 from any Kohler dealer.

BTW I'm just going from memory here...I know the 10 hp and up engines use this, and I'm also pretty sure the 7 and 8 hp ones do too.

Thanks Matt I went back to take a look this morning and it does have the brass nut your talking about.I took it apart and cleaned everything and reinstalled and I can actually see it bubbling between the shaft and the nut.Im guessing that is just a place where its gona seep a little oil regardless.I'll have fun at my local parts store with this one.I have to take parts numbers with me or I never get the right part with out them...lol....Trouble is Im haveing a little problem get this one figured out from my parts manual....Thanks again Randy....

I *think* this is what you need: KH-230476

It kinda makes it seem like it's a bushing that's pressed into the block instead of a big brass nut like the K241-K341 engines use. I've never had a 7 or 8 hp engine apart, so I don't know for sure. The service manual isn't clear, either. If you can take a picture with the governor arm off, I might be able to confirm what you need.

Thats the part number Im thinking too.....It is a big brass nut like what your saying I took it off and cleaned it up....Machined on the inside to fit the shaft....The service manual and the parts break down are a little shady here was my thoughts too...
