Proper charging

Morning Folks,
I finally got my "free" 1973 model 129 running. The G/S was rebuilt, new battery and crossed fingers work great. The initial run was around the yard!!
I have 2 questions for all the experts.

1. The ampmeter shows discharge. Can some one explain how to field it? Last time I fielded a voltage regulator was on a '58 Pontiac Star Chief.

2. I noticed on the PTO the wear button is missing. I am not sure if the PTO is working. I there a way to check it and is the button available? Is there a substitute I can use if not available?

Any suggestions as to the next crucial steps necessary to revive this old gal?

OOPPS, I quess my 2 questions grew. Any help from the VAST experience here would be greatly Appreciated.
