104 no power under load
 

Hi guys, searched forum and found some helpful info, but still have few questions.

i just got a late 60's 104, would start and run but not for long. so i put in a new air cleaner, changed oil, filed points and re gapped, cleaned and adjusted carb, tightened head bolts, checked timing, made a new intake gasket(old one was half missing). it starts and runs, sounds good, but as soon as you engage mover deck or put it in first it, it bogs down and will die. the governor doesn't have a spring attached to it so i think that's the problem. i don't see and info on the spring in the service manual that came with it. anyone have a pic of how the spring attaches and are new springs still available?

Yes, new springs are available. You can get them from Kohler, Cub Cadet, online or whatever. Go to the technical section on this site and download a manual. It tells you how and where to install the spring, and what all the different holes are for. If you have trouble finding the service manual, I can post a link. :beerchug:

I don't have a 104, so I'm not exactly sure about the governor linkage, but here's what the 123 looks like...

Welcome to OCC. Just another bit of information is to check the tension of the belt on your deck to make sure that it is not too much. Make sure that everything turns freely.

As mentioned above, go to the tech section and download the manual/s for your machine there will be pictures for just about anything you could ever need.

Also in the tech section there are a couple of good write-up about timing your engine... If you used a feeler gauge to time your engine, you wasted your time.

Without a functioning governor, your engine has no real way to add fuel to the engine beyond WOT - no load setting. So your engine could easily stumble when a load is applied.

My brother has an old Ferguson tractor with a bad governor and it's a fight to keep from killing the engine when doing some bush hogging.

I sold a friend of mine a newer Craftsman lawn tractor with I think a 22 hp engine, but the plastic governor gear broke. The guy that bought it, knew this going in, never fixed it either. He learned his yard and every where he needed to goose the throttle or let off so a not to blow the engine. As fas as I know, he is still using the lawn tractor - LOL

made it back home and messed with it for a few minutes. checked the governor, it's adjusted correctly, and got a spring on it and played with the placement of it. still no go. starts fairly easy but after a few minutes it starts slowing down and dies, like it's run out of gas(but it has/is getting good gas flow). will pop out of the exhaust then start back up, only to do the same thing, apply any type of load and it dies. it smokes like crazy so maybe it's internal?

timing was checked with a timing light as per the manual instructions.
