Motor Mount bolt hold stripped
 

I changed oil on my K321 in the 149 today and noticed the motor mount bolt on the side of the engine nearest my right foot was out and gone. I found a bolt to fit and putting it in only to find the threads were stripped.

Can I rethread it while it is in the tractor? It seems the hole in the frame might be big enough to try that. BUT, I don't want to wreck the freakin' oil pan.

I meant to say "Motor Mount bolt hole stripped" Edit won't let me correct that.

Take some time and find a cast iron oil pan. Those aluminum pans aren't worth messing with. Just my opinion. The pan on my 128 had done the same thing. I swapped out with a cast iron pan.

Yes, you can do it. Get the helicoil kit, jack up that side of the tractor, and drill out the hole with the bit that comes in the kit., Then tap the new threads with the tap and then screw in the thread insert. Then Bob's your uncle.

I've done this to a couple oil pans, though not in the tractor as you're faced with. But I'd try it if I had to.

He's not going to be able to do it in the tractor...... how would you get the heli-coil in? Drill bit yes, maybe even the tap.....

I'm with DX. Scrap the aluminum and get a cast. I just got one off ebay the other day. $23 shipped.

Yes, and with the CI pan you can use a magnetic heater in the winter to pre heat the engine for easy starts. If you live in a cold climate and use your Cub a lot for snow work, that alone is worth the time, $$$, and effort IMHO>

When I got my 149 there was only one bolt left in the engine and it was loose. I pulled the engine and helicoiled all 4 holes and put in new bolts. Its been like that for 2 years now with no issues.

OP, I'm about to heliocoil an aluminum pan come spring, you'll be fine if you go that route. But I will say, given the choice between the two, I'll take CI any day.

The short answer is, it would be difficult at best to Heli-coil it with the engine in the tractor.

You can take the engine out and then Heli-coil it. Good choice.

You can replace the pan with a cast iron one, and then FORGET about it. Better Choice.

FWIW, if you get your new pan and clean it up so that it suites you, a new gasket, and your oil, you can do this job in an afternoon. You can actually do this job in a morning and be driving your Cub later that day.

Hello, i got a ci pan off the bid site for 28$ shipped and consider myself very lucky. It was the 3rd one i bid on in a month. I think DVoyt has some. I think he gets 40$ for them. Mike

I agree the CI pan is better, but that's a lot more work. If you get the drill in, and the tap in, why wouldn't the insert just screw right in? It would go past the frame rail, fully into the pan. What am I missing?
